From Idea to Web Start-up in 21 Days: Creating bacn.com - pdf

From Idea to Web Start up in 21 Days: Creating bacn.comBook Description
Once upon a time, starting a business meant months of researching, refining business goals and writing business plans, talking to investors and banks, negotiating for loans, and raising money. But today, agile web development practices mean that you can almost launch on an idea and figure it out as you go. At least that's what authors Jason Glaspey and Scott Kveton and their colleague Michael Richardson did when starting bacn.com, an online bacon retailer.

In this mouth-watering tale, they describe their process of starting a business on a shoestring, including the things they did right and the things they did wrong. Bacn.com didn't make them millionaires — not even close! But the lessons they learned have led to comfortable success on their follow-up ventures. And whether it's choosing a domain name or selecting the right content management systems, buying and storing inventory or figuring out fulfillment, using social media for marketing or finding a location to host an "epic" party, their stories will help you jumpstart your own web business.

About the Author
Jason Glaspey is a freelance interactive producer who works with a wide range of clients creating interactive content. Jason has been building websites and online tools for himself for years now as a way to escape the client work that kept him busy during the day. By constantly fiddling and testing opportunities online, he’s continuously refined the way in which new businesses are created in a day where much of what you need can be acquired with a laptop and an internet connection. His professional experience consists of global brands such as Nike, Burton Snowboards, Starbucks, and Nokia, to small local companies native to his hometown of Portland, Oregon.

Scott Kveton is an entrepreneur who lives and works in Portland, Oregon. He is currently the co-founder and CEO a mobile phone infrstructure company called Urban Airship and has been active with a variety of startups and open source/standards groups over the past 15 years. Beyond technology, Scott is an avid gardener, from-scratch pizza maker and of course, bacon lover.

Simple and Usable Web, Mobile, and Interaction Design - pdf

Simple and Usable Web, Mobile, and Interaction DesignBook Description
In a complex world, products that are easy to use win favor with consumers. This is the first book on the topic of simplicity aimed specifically at interaction designers. It shows how to drill down and simplify user experiences when designing digital tools and applications. It begins by explaining why simplicity is attractive, explores the laws of simplicity, and presents proven strategies for achieving simplicity. Remove, hide, organize and displace become guidelines for designers, who learn simplicity by seeing before and after examples and case studies where the results speak for themselves.

Reviews
A great read. Full of tips and techniques. Like "Don't make me think!" it's the kind of book you'll want to pass on to the people you work with. I highly recommend it.
– Gerry Gaffney, Author Forms that work: designing Web forms for usability

Next time someone says to just "make it simple," show them a copy of this book. Simple and Usable is a delightful afternoon read full of short, memorable examples that remind us why simple isn't always easy.
– Stephen P. Anderson, Author Mental Notes

Think things have to be complicated to be powerful? Think again. In this clear, compelling (and beautiful) book, Giles Colborne makes the argument for simplicity. He shows us design as a process of thoughtfully crafting a product that is just simple enough, but no more.
– Whitney Quesenbery, Author Storytelling for user experience

Packed with practical strategies for achieving simplicity—and an enjoyable read. Giles manages to infuse frequent examples into the book's impressively concise 1-page sections. As an advocate of simplicity, I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a hand in building websites, software, or products.
– Tyler Tate, Twigkit

An amazing book. Just buy it, consider it a $20 2-hour brain upgrade.
– Brandon Hays, The Daily Flux

This book is a delight. Everything about it is Simple and Usable – the layout, the beautiful illustrations, and the text. This is a book I will return to again to deal with specific questions. I'd recommend Simple and Usable to anyone involved in physical or digital product design.
– Annie Dryden, Senior Interaction Designer, BBC

About the Author
Chris Casciano started building web sites professionally in 1997 when web development meant working with tables and font tags, sticking to a “web safe” color pallette, and worrying about load times for those using dial-up modems. He is now working as freelance web developer, spending the last 9 years in the trenches architecting and building web sites for digital agencies and their clients. Throughout his career Chris has explored ways to implement emerging technologies like HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript in practical ways — balancing the bleeding edge with the responsibilities of serving a diverse audience. His personal projects and writing have inspired industry leaders with projects like “Daily CSS Fun” in 2002 serving as inspiration for the popular “CSS Zen Garden”. Since 2003, Chris has been an advocate for adoption of standards as a member of the Web Standards Project.

His personal web site, Place Name Here (http://placenamehere.com), now home to a blog covering both web development and his other passion of digital photography, has been online since 1998.

Crossing the Energy Divide: Moving from Fossil Fuel Dependence to a Clean-Energy Future - pdf

Crossing the Energy Divide: Moving from Fossil Fuel Dependence to a Clean Energy FutureBook Description
Praise for Crossing the Energy Divide

The Environmentally and Economically Smart Strategy for Solving the Global Energy Crisis–Starting Now

If we continue our highly inefficient, dangerous energy usage, we're headed for both economic and environmental catastrophe. However, the hard truth is that alternative fuels can't fully replace fossil fuels for decades. What's more, new research indicates that energy inefficiencies are retarding economic growth even more than most experts ever realized.

Crossing the Energy Divide is about solving all these problems at once. The authors, two leading experts in energy and environmental economics, show how massive improvements in energy efficiency can bridge the global economy until clean renewables can fully replace fossil fuels.

Robert and Edward Ayres demonstrate how we can radically reform the way we manage our existing energy systems to double the amount of "energy service" we get from every drop of fossil fuel we use.

These techniques require no scientific breakthroughs: Many companies and institutions are applying them right now, but tens of thousands more could. This book offers a strategic guide for using them to solve the energy crisis once and for all—reducing carbon emissions, achieving true energy security, and reigniting economic growth for decades to come.

More energy, without more emissions
Recapturing lost energy from today's fossil fuels

There is such a thing as a free lunch
Mitigating climate disaster and improving prosperity at the same time

The future of electricity
Reforming tomorrow's electrical system: smarter, more productive, and more reliable

The implications for cities, transportation, business, and government
Making the decisions that prepare you for a high-cost energy future

Review
"This book makes coherent and rigorous arguments that increasing energy efficiency is the primary driver of economic growth today and is key to managing climate change."
–Kandeh Yumkella, Director-General, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)

"It's exciting to see some of the riddles of economic history solved. Energy efficiency may become the master key to future wealth!"
–Ernst von Weizsacker, Dean, Bren School of Environmental Science and Management (ret), University of California, Santa Barbara

"This important new book compels a significantly greater attention to the critical role of energy productivity in maintaining a robust economy."
–John A. "Skip" Laitner, Director, Economic and Social Analysis, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE)

"Even if renewable energy sources can eventually sustain present living standards in industrialized countries, it will require decades for them to grow into that role. This book is by far the most realistic and helpful proposal I have seen for what can be done to cross the enormous energy gap between what we have and what we want."
–Dennis Meadows, Coauthor, Limits to Growth

"This book is 'mythbusters' applied to the conventional wisdom that reducing greenhouse gas emissions will also reduce income. It should switch the debate from what it will cost to mitigate climate change to a search for policy changes to spur profitable efficiency investments in generation and use of energy services."
–Thomas R. Casten, Chair, Recycled Energy Development, LLC

"Crossing the Energy Divide has appeared right when those of us in the energy sector need it most. Robert and Edward Ayres do an excellent job of explaining that every product and service has an energy component, and the cost of that component will determine our future quality of life."
–John K. Cool, P.E., C.P.E, President, PowerPlus Engineering, Inc.

PHP 5 in Practice - pdf

PHP 5 in PracticeBook Description
With the release of PHP 5 web developers need a guide to developing with PHP 5 to both learn its complex new features and more fully implement the long-standing features on which PHP’s success is built. PHP 5 in Practice is a reference guide that provides developers with easy-to-use and easily extensible code to solve common PHP problems. It focuses on providing real code solutions to problems, allowing the reader to learn by seeing exactly what is happening behind the scenes to get your solution. Because a real-life situation will rarely match the book’s example problems precisely, PHP 5 in Practice explains the solution well enough that you will understand it and can learn how to truly solve your own problem.

PHP 5 in Practice is a ‘cookbook’ or ‘problem and solution’ style book.  In fact, it is the spiritual successor to the PHP Developer’s Cookbook, also by Sam’s Publishing.

When writing this book, we attempted to avoid the common pitfall in these ‘cookbook’ type technical references can take, where so many of the examples/solutions are so simplistic, to be concepts explained/answered by a single function call.

Therefore instead, we focused on presenting real world problems, with in some cases a rather beefy solution presented.  The more ‘simple’ problems/solutions still exist, but only in the form of a ‘quick hits’ section at the beginning of each chapter.   This is to present a number of PHP functions that by themselves can solve many of your problems, without spending whole paragraphs on them.

In the end, while you can read this book cover-to-cover, we hope it serves as a great reference manual, sitting beside you while you work. Available for you to pick up and reference a solution that you’d scanned earlier.   Or for just parts that interest you, in order to spark your imagination into directions that will solve your own problems.
