About the Author
Jim Boyce has authored or coauthored more than 45 books about computer hardware and software, including Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 Plain & Simple and Microsoft Outlook Version 2002 Inside Out. Creating such learning environments that suit Design and Technology subjects requires understanding and implementation of both basic and advanced Moodle features.This book takes a detailed look at Moodle features with examples of how to fully support the Design and Technology curricula using Moodle. We start with setting up a very basic Moodle course for Design and Technology, and then set up some basic resources and some interactive material. You will customize your own courses and create a course for each of the key areas of the DT subjects and add material to them. We will create some basic reporting and assessment tools and enhance the look of the course. We will use Moodle’s detailed and sophisticated gradebook to assess your student s ‘ learning progress in activities from an assignment to an offline activity. Then we will support students in designing a product or trying a new recipe in food technology in market research to find out exactly what the public wants in relation to their product, by designing a questionnaire. We will allow product design or resistant material students use the HTML features of the questionnaire module to incorporate images into the questions to make it clearer to respondents what it is they are trying to make and sell.

We will allow students in construction to gather and organize their research material in a great deal of detail and also allow them to better understand their target market and the materials used in their construction through detailed questioning. We will allow food technology students to discuss and receive constructive feedback on food products that contribute to health issues that will enable them to make informed decisions and therefore better quality products. Then we explore several components within Moodle’s core functionality and some third-party sources to display the progress of the student’s work and development. We then have an overview of the different design portfolios available. Finally we look at additional ways to enhance the teaching and learning of D & T with Moodle using third-party modules and add-ons.

About the Author
A lifelong educator, Paul Taylor has always been involved in aspects of education and training in both companies and educational establishments. After working in the world of animation hardware for a small company in California in the 1990s and getting a company credit on Toy Story, Paul returned to the UK and to Education. The idea was to combine real-world computing experience with educational principles. This led to 9 years of teaching secondary school ICT and Business Studies; running a web design company with A Level students for their vocational qualification.

A return to teaching coincided with an introduction to Linux and open source and Paul was an early adopter of Moodle in late 2003. This led to dialog with various Moodle users and Partners and an eventual leading role with the UK’s oldest Moodle partner, Pteppic, in 2007.

Mark Brummel is an all-round Microsoft Dynamics NAV specialist. He started in 1997 as an end user but quickly moved to the other side of the table. Some of these add-on systems exceed the standard product when it comes to size and complexity. He has also been coaching colleagues and troubleshooting ‘impossible’ problems as a part of day-to-day work. Mark has trained most of the experienced NAV developers for the NAV 2009 product in The Netherlands and Belgium and he has been hired by almost every NAV reseller in the Benelux.

Mark works as a freelancer. His main focus area is to help out end users in implementations all over the world.

Mark was the first world wide to use the NAV 2009 (CTP3) product in a production system feeding back valuable information to Microsoft. Today, he is still involved in projects to provide input for future versions and test new CTP releases.

A special project has been performance tuning of the Dynamics NAV product on SQL Server. From 2007 to 2009, he was involved in the development of the ‘SQL Perform Tools’ as business partner of SQL Perform Benelux. As a unique specialist, he has done break through research in improving the performance of Dynamics NAV on SQL Server.

In his spare time, Mark maintains his blog on brummelds.com. This blog contains a wide range of articles about both the Microsoft Dynamics NAV and SQL Server product. He is also a frequent speaker at Microsoft events and a writer for independent Dynamics NAV websites and user groups. Its scholars hail from psychology, neurology, theology, statistics, philosophy, internal medicine, anthropology, sociology, and other disciplines. Network members interact constantly, and the entire Network convenes twice annually for a four-day retreat to discuss, critique, and learn from each others’ work.

From Inside the Book: How to Add Watermarks
There might be times when you want words to appear behind the text of a printed or online document. For example, you might want the word CONFIDENTIAL to appear faintly behind the text in a contract. When you want to dress up the pages of your document without distracting attention from the main text, you might consider displaying a faint graphic behind the text. These faint background effects are called watermarks. Watermarks are visible in a document, but because they are faint, they don't interfere with the readers' ability to view the document's main text.

In this exercise, you'll first add a text watermark to every page of a document, and then you'll add a graphic watermark.

SET UP You need the AuthorsDraft_start document and the OTSI-Logo picture located in your Chapter09 practice file folder to complete this exercise. Open the AuthorsDraft_start document, and save it as AuthorsDraft. Turn off formatting marks and the ruler, and set the magnification so that you can see all the text. Then follow the steps.
