Put Option Strategies for Smarter Trading: How to Protect and Build Capital in Turbulent Markets - pdf

Put Option Strategies for Smarter Trading: How to Protect and Build Capital in Turbulent MarketsBook Description
Options traders most commonly focus on calls: the right to purchase stock if prices rise. The 2008 stock market crash demonstrated just how misguided this singular emphasis can be: thousands of investors suffered massive losses they could have avoided through the careful, defensive use of strategies based on puts instead of calls. Now, for the first time, there’s a comprehensive, balanced guide to using puts to create profits, protect stock positions, and hedge against all types of risk. Renowned expert Michael C. Thomsett, author of the #1 options best-seller Getting Started in Options, introduces powerful “defensive” strategies that are typically ignored or deemphasized in most other options books: indispensable techniques for any investor anticipating a market decline, now or in the future. Thomsett shows how to use long puts to ensure paper profits in stock or to offset losses, even when stocks decline steeply and quickly; how to apply puts in straddles and spreads, in multi-part strategies that prevent losses and hedge risks; how to identify opportunities to create cash flow by selling limited-risk naked puts to create cash flow, and much more. These defensive strategies balance out the “you can’t lose” approach seen in all too many options books. What’s more, Thomsett’s clear writing style, complemented by dozens of easy-to-understand tables, graphics, and examples, makes it easy for any investor to apply these strategies successfully.

About the Author

Michael C. Thomsett is a widely published author with over 70 published books. He is especially known for his options publishing. His books include Options Trading for the Conservative Investor and The Options Trading Body of Knowledge (FT Press), Winning with Options (Amacom Books), The LEAPS Strategist (Marketplace Books) and the best-selling Getting Started in Options (John Wiley & Sons) which has sold over 250,000 copies and was released in 2009 in its 8th edition. Thomsett also writes on many stock market investment topics. His Investment and Securities Dictionary (hardcover McFarland & Company and paperback Macmillan General Reference) was named by Choice Magazine as an Outstanding Academic Book of the Year. He also wrote The Mathematics of Investing (John Wiley & Sons), The Stock Investor's Pocket Calculator (Amacom) and Stock Profits (FT Press). The author lives near Nashville and writes fulltime. Technical Analysis Plain and Simple: Charting the Markets in Your Language, 3rd Edition - pdf

Technical Analysis Plain and Simple: Charting the Markets in Your Language, 3rd EditionBook Description
Technical analysis offers powerful, objective tools for picking stocks and making money – and in today’s market environment, that makes it more indispensable than ever. Unfortunately, most explanations of the subject simply confuse investors instead of enlightening them. In this clear, practical, fully updated book, Barron’s technical analysis columnist Michael N. Kahn introduces state-of-the-art technical analysis techniques in simple language that any investor can understand and use. Kahn explains exactly how technical analysis works, then teaches you how to read charts and translate them into actual buy and sell decisions. Along the way, you’ll learn how to use technical analysis to complement your current approach to stock selection, discover what makes a stock look promising to technical analysts, and objectively assess both risk and reward. This updated and revised Third Edition contains many new examples reflecting today’s transformed market environment, including detailed coverage of recognizing bubbles, including real estate (2006), oil (2008), and bonds (2009). Kahn offers powerful new insights into the relationship between technical analysis and market psychology, as well as crucial, up-to-date guidance on sector rotation for changing markets. He also presents a full chapter on “when things stop working”: how to recognize when usually reliable technical tools are being overwhelmed by “once-in-a-thousand-year,” “black-swan”-type events.

The Art of Concurrency - pdf

The Art of ConcurrencyBook Description
If you’re looking to take full advantage of multi-core processors with concurrent programming, this practical book provides the knowledge and hands-on experience you need. The Art of Concurrency is one of the few resources to focus on implementing algorithms in the shared-memory model of multi-core processors, rather than just theoretical models or distributed-memory architectures. Written by an Intel engineer with over two decades of parallel and concurrent programming experience, this book will help you:Understand parallelism and concurrency Explore differences between programming for shared-memory and distributed-memory Learn guidelines for designing multithreaded applications, including testing and tuning Discover how to make best use of different threading libraries, including Windows threads, POSIX threads, OpenMP, and Intel Threading Building Blocks Explore how to implement concurrent algorithms that involve sorting, searching, graphs, and other practical computations

The Art of Concurrency shows you how to keep algorithms scalable to take advantage of new processors with even more cores. For developing parallel code algorithms for concurrent programming, this book is a must.

About the Author
Curt Hibbs has always been slightly obsessed with new technologies and tracking technology trends. But he will tell you that this is simply because he is lazy, always looking for new methods and technologies to make his work easier and more productive. This led to his discovery of Ruby in 2001 (when it was still relatively unknown outside of Japan) and to his founding several highly successful Ruby open source projects.

For most of his professional career, which started in the early 1970′s, Curt has been a consultant to well-known companies like Hewlett Packard, Intuit, Corel, WordStar, Charles Schwab, Vivendi Universal, and more. He has also been a principal in several startups. Curt now works as a Senior Software Engineer for The Boeing Company in St. Louis.

Steve Jewett is a software developer with The Boeing Company, where he is involved in the development of network-centric cognitive decision support systems. His software experience started with BASIC and FORTRAN on a DEC PDP 1170 back in high school. The trail from there to the present day includes a litany of languages, a broad spectrum of design strategies and development methodologies, and a bevy of software projects, some of which were actually successful. Over a 20+ year career, he has developed software for automated test equipment, weapon/aircraft integration, embedded systems, desktop applications and web applications. His primary areas of interest are software architecture design and software development methodologies, particularly agile software development and its relationship to lean processes.

Mike Sullivan has over 6 years of experience teaching at the university level, and has spent the last 4 years working with software teams in small companies and large corporations to drive valuable solutions and improve team dynamics. He is currently working in a small research team within a large corporation, implementing Lean techniques to improve the software his team delivers. Mike’s interests include golf, Cardinals baseball and teaching.
